August has a way of catching up with us. After weeks of heat, travel, longer days, outdoor activities, and schedules that look nothing like the rest of the year, you may notice that your body feels different on the mat. Your summer yoga practice can help you tune into those changes and give your body what it actually needs as summer begins to wind down.

Why Your Summer Yoga Practice Can Feel Different
Summer changes more than our schedules.
We stay outside longer. We travel. We spend weekends gardening, golfing, walking, swimming, working in the yard, or squeezing every last bit of life out of those beautiful Michigan summer days. We may sleep later, eat differently, drink less water than we should, and move our bodies in ways we don't during the rest of the year.
By August, all of that can show up on the mat.
Maybe your hips feel tighter than usual. Your balance feels a little off. You're more tired halfway through class. Or maybe all that summer movement has you feeling stronger and more open.
There isn't necessarily anything wrong when your practice feels different. Your body isn't exactly the same every time you step onto your mat, and yoga gives you an opportunity to notice that.
Heat and Hydration During a Summer Yoga Practice
When temperatures stay high for weeks at a time, hydration becomes especially important.
Sweating more throughout the day means your body is continually losing fluid. Add outdoor activities or a heated yoga class, and those needs can increase even more.
Arriving at class well hydrated starts long before you roll out your mat. Drinking water consistently throughout the day can help you feel better prepared for movement, especially during the warmest part of summer.
It's also worth paying attention to how you feel once class begins. Some days your body may be ready to work. Other days, the heat and everything else you've done that week may mean backing off a little feels better.
Listening to that information is part of practicing yoga, too.
Your Yoga Practice Changes Because Life Changes
One of the things yoga teaches us over time is awareness.
We start noticing where we're holding tension. We recognize when our breathing changes. We become more aware of the difference between challenging ourselves and forcing something that doesn't feel right.
That awareness is especially useful during times of transition.
Late August sits in an interesting space. Summer isn't over, but fall is already creeping onto the calendar. Vacations wind down. School starts again. Work schedules change. Days gradually get shorter. Life begins shifting before the season officially does.
Your yoga practice gives you a place to notice those changes instead of simply rushing from one season into the next.
Let Your Summer Yoga Practice Meet You Where You Are
Your practice doesn't have to look the same every week to be valuable.
Some days you may want a class that challenges you. Other days you may want to move more slowly. You might crave the warmth and energy of the hot room one week and something completely different the next. That's one reason having different ways to practice can be so valuable.

The question doesn't always have to be, "What should I be doing?"
Sometimes a better question is, "What would feel good for my body today?"
Taking Your Summer Yoga Practice Into Fall
There's often pressure at the end of summer to suddenly get back on track. New schedules begin, calendars fill up, and September can start to feel like a second January.
But your body doesn't need to flip a switch simply because the season is changing.
Instead, pay attention to what August has taught you.
Maybe you've discovered that you feel better when you move more often. Maybe you've learned that rest makes your stronger classes feel better. Maybe you found a class you love, practiced at a different time of day, or simply became better at noticing what your body is telling you.
Those are things worth carrying forward.
A summer yoga practice doesn't have to end when summer does. It can evolve alongside you.
As we move toward fall here in Monroe, let your practice be one of the places where you can check in, move, breathe, and decide what you need next.
